Raining in Illinois
Outside the floor to ceiling windows
in the air and in the trees
it rains on new leaves
of heartbreak green.
Ranks of fisheye droplets
line each railing
tiny shivering globes
reflect the spring.
Each leaf is a remembrance
of other leaves
in other woods
in other springs.
Other rains, in other Mays
Seven years ago,
twenty-seven years ago,
It rained
and ran
and is gone
to the rivers
to the seas
to the air
to the ground
to the trees.
